Skylanders Battlecast Trading Card Game Launches on Mobile

Activision released the latest mobile game in the Skylanders franchise: Skylanders Battlecast. The trading card game allows players to collect digital cards, as well as to purchase real cards that they can activate within the game.

With Skylanders Battlecast, users receive a free starting deck of digital trading cards, with cards representing Skylanders, magic spells, relics and gear items. The game features 60 single-player missions to complete, and it also allows users to play against others in player-vs-player matches.

During a match, players control up to three Skylanders on their team. On each turn, they can spend a limited number of crystals to cast spell, relic and gear cards from their hand. Spell cards may instantly damage an enemy character, heal one of the player’s Skylanders, and so on. Relics, meanwhile, are cast onto the battlefield, and have their own hit points. Each relic has an effect on a match, which lasts until the relic is destroyed by the other team or is replaced by another relic. Finally, gear cards contain gear items that can be equipped to a Skylander to change its stats.

Some cards can only be used by certain Skylanders, and players can change their active Skylander on each turn to use these cards. Inactive Skylanders will rest on the sidelines of the battlefield, and they will regain lost hit points on each turn if they’ve taken damage. Finally, even if users have already cast one or more cards on their turn, they can also trigger a basic attack with their active Skylander before ending their turn.

As players complete missions and separate daily quests (e.g., win three versus matches), they may receive additional digital trading cards and coins. Coins can be used to purchase new cards in the game’s store, and to level up individual cards over time.

The game allows users to create and customize multiple decks, and while users can create each deck one card at a time, they can also allow the game to autofill their decks with cards appropriate to the Skylanders they’ve chosen.

In addition to purchasing digital cards, players have the option to purchase real-world Skylanders Battlecast battle packs and booster packs, which contain real cards that can be activated within the game. Users can scan these cards with their device’s camera to add them to their in-game deck. Once a card is scanned, it comes to life via augmented reality.

Battle packs contain 22 cards, and they can be purchased for $9.99, while booster packs contain eight cards and are available for $4.99. As players collect duplicate real-world cards, scanning the duplicate card will cause their in-game card to level up.

In a statement, Josh Taub, senior vice president of product management at Activision Publishing, commented:

We continue to provide a variety of fun new ways for fans to explore Skylanders and Skylanders Battlecast is an amazing new innovation. Our mobile card game offers players not only a collectible experience but also augmented reality, PvP and an exciting single-player campaign.

Skylanders Battlecast is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.
