Instagram Adds Contextual Stickers, Holiday Stickers, More

Instagram released a host of updates Tuesday: contextual stickers, holiday-themed stickers, multiple text fields, hands-free mode for videos and the ability to save Instagram Stories.

Contextual stickers allow users to add the time, weather and location to their posts, in multiple styles, and they can be accessed via the smiley face icon in the top-right-hand corner of the camera screen for users who have updated their iOS and Android applications to version 10.3. Tapping the time, weather or location stickers gives users access to the menu of different styles. Instagram added in a blog post:

No matter where you are or what you’re up to, you can add context to your story with stickers. After you’ve taken a photo or video, you’ll see a new stickers button next to the text and drawing tools. Tap the smiley face to find customizable stickers for weather, the current time and even your location. Adding a location sticker works the same as adding location to the posts you share to feed–simply choose or search for your location. People watching your story will be able to tap the sticker to learn more about the location, but your story won’t show up on the location page itself.

It’s easy to make stickers your own: Move them around, make them bigger or smaller and choose from different styles to match your mood. Subtle stickers let your photo or video shine, whereas vibrant stickers bring an extra pop of color to your story. And you can add as many stickers as you want to any part of your story.

Instagram is also helping users ring in the holiday season with a selection of themed stickers including a candy cane brush.

And users now have the ability to add multiple text fields to photos and videos, setting each to align left, center or right. The Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network added in its blog post:

You can add as much text to your photo or video as you’d like–simply keep tapping the text button to add more. Choose between left-, center- and right-justified text, and a new slider lets you adjust size easily with automatic text wrap.

The new hands-free mode for videos allows users to tap to start their videos without being required to press and hold the button.

Finally, only iOS users initially can save their Stories from the past 24 hours as one video by tapping the save icon in the viewing sheet for their Stories.
