Facebook Removes Maps From Nearby Friends Feature

Facebook’s Nearby Friends feature is providing less specific information these days.

The social network introduced Nearby Friends for iPhone and Android users in April 2014, and the optional feature notified users when friends who had also opted in were nearby, complete with maps and specific location.

However, Facebook confirmed to Josh Constine of TechCrunch that the maps are being removed, and Nearby Friends now only offers information on which neighborhoods friends are in.

Constine also shared the image below of a desktop version of the feature, which provides users with a list of friends who are within a few miles, also by neighborhood, and gives them the option of tapping those friends’ names to send them messages. Facebook confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing this feature.

Earlier this month, the social network also began testing a Poke-like feature called Send a Wave, and a Facebook spokesperson told SocialTimes:

We are testing a new feature within Nearby Friends allowing people to send their friends a waving hand emoji to say hello and help them meet up. This is meant to give people more ways to express themselves and help friends interact with one another in new fun and lightweight ways.
