Twitter to Live-Stream MLB, NHL Games, 120 Sports Highlight Show

Twiitter’s live-streaming splurge continued with Monday’s announcement of pacts with Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and 120 Sports.

Weekly out-of-market games will be live-streamed on Twitter from MLB and the NHL, and 120 Sports will produce an exclusive, nightly sports highlight show, The Rally. Twitter said in a release announcing the new content that its arrangements with the two leagues and 120 Sports were reached as part of its already existing partnership with Major League Baseball Advanced Media.

The weekly MLB and NHL games will be available free-of-charge to Twitter users in the U.S., with the baseball contests to also be available worldwide, minus select international territories. Twitter said a schedule will come “at a later date.”

The Rally will cover highlights from multiple sports using “a distinct format designed to integrate with Twitter’s platform,” which will include determining live trending topics via Twitter data and other interactive elements.

Twitter chief financial officer Anthony Noto said in the release:

Twitter is the fastest way to see what’s unfolding in MLB and the NHL. MLBAM has pioneered streaming live digital video, and we could not be more excited to partner with them on live games, as well as The Rally, giving our audience the live sports events they are already talking about on one screen on Twitter.

MLBAM executive vice president, business Kenny Gersh added:

Twitter has long been a great partner and platform for both baseball and hockey fans as they follow their favorite teams and players every day. We know fans will embrace what this wide-ranging partnership brings–expanded and reliable access to live baseball and hockey and the introduction of Twitter’s first daily live highlight show delivered intuitively to a platform where they’re actively engaged with the games.

NHL executive vp of digital media and strategic planning Stephen McArdle said:

Twitter has become a crucial forum and engagement tool for hockey fans to enhance their NHL viewing experience and stay connected to the game on and off the ice. We are excited that fans will now be able to enjoy live NHL games through our partnership with Twitter.

And 120 Sports president Jason Coyle added:

The Rally on Twitter will combine the production and editorial values of television with the speed and interactivity of digital media. We are excited to bring this first-of-its-kind programming to Twitter as we continue the push of 120 Sports beyond the limitations of traditional media, infusing real-time, scaled fan sentiment and feedback into the sports conversation every night.
