Minecraft Boss Update Coming Oct. 18, Will Include Add-Ons

Microsoft and Mojang announced that Minecraft‘s upcoming Boss Update will launch on Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, Minecraft: Pocket Edition and Minecraft: Gear VR Edition Oct. 18.

In addition to allowing users to fight two bosses (the Wither and the Elder Guardian) and use slash commands, Microsoft revealed that the Boss Update will include the “first iteration of Add-Ons.” These Add-Ons will allow users to change elements within their worlds by “editing simple text files.”

In a blog post, Jesse Merriam, executive producer for Minecraft, explained:

By editing simple text files, anyone can tweak Minecraft itself to add enormous explosions to tiny chickens or make villagers run at lightning speed to chase away any new monster mob you choose to create.

Users will be able to share worlds they create with Add-Ons with others directly, and they will also be able to upload these worlds to their Realms.

Users will be able to download free examples of Add-On worlds from Minecraft’s website once the Boss Update launches. These examples will include the Alien Invasion Add-On Mojang showed off at this year’s E3, as well as a Castle Siege Add-On, which was created by SethBling, BlockWorks and Mindcrack.

Going forward, Merriam said “we plan for Add-Ons to grow and include the ability to alter items, blocks and even more.”

Finally, the Boss Update will allow users to use their Xbox Wireless Controllers with Bluetooth while playing Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta and Minecraft: Gear VR Edition.
