Google Launches PhotoScan App on iOS, Android

Google announced the release of PhotoScan, a mobile application designed to help users quickly scan real-world photographs and create digital copies of them that can be stored online.

With the PhotoScan app, a user can position their device over a real-world photograph so that the entire photograph is visible within the frame in the app. From there, they can tap the capture button to cause four dots to appear in the environment through augmented reality. The app then asks the user to move their device so that another circle on the screen will line up with each of the four circles.

Once this step is complete, the app will process the image and provide the user with a digital version of the photograph that they can store and share. Specifically, the app will automatically detect the edges of the photograph and crop the picture, and it will also automatically rotate the photograph to the proper orientation. The app will also remove any glare from the photograph. It’s worth noting that users can manually tweak the cropping on a photograph once it has been processed.

As users scan photographs, they can save them to their devices and then tap a button to load the Google Photos app, where the photos can be stored for free. Users can also upload their photos to other photo-storage services outside of the PhotoScan app.

PhotoScan is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
