Duolingo announced the release of Tinycards on iOS. The flashcard learning application was designed to help users memorize content through short quizzes.
With TinyCards, users begin by following at least three flashcard categories, with options related to learning different languages, studying geography, history and more. Duolingo users can login with their Duolingo accounts to bring in their existing language learning progress.
Each category is broken down into multiple subtopics. For instance, the Duolingo category contains lessons related to learning Spanish, German, French and other languages.
Each topic contains a group of lessons for users to complete. These lessons contain flashcards that users can study and quiz questions that test their memorization of the material. For instance, when completing a basic U.S. geography lesson, users may see cards related to specific states.
If users come across content they’re already familiar with, they can tap the “I already know this” button to hide the associated flashcards and skip any quiz questions associated with them.
While lessons may begin with information and quiz questions relating to only a few cards, additional cards and pieces of information may be added as lessons progress, which may give users more to remember over time. Users can browse all of the flashcards in each topic even when they’re not participating in lessons.
Elsewhere, users can create their own flashcard decks focused on topics they’re familiar with. For instance, users can create decks of cards related to the characters from their favorite television shows.
In a statement, Luis von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, commented:
Duolingo redefined the way millions of people learn languages by making it fun, effective and free. We’re excited to bring that experience to flashcards in order to help school kids suffering through memorization for tests. We also hope this will motivate adults to learn new topics to enhance their lives.
Tinycards is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store.
