3-D image-sharing application Seene is no longer on the scene, as parent company Obvious Engineering pulled the plug on the app following its reported acquisition by Snapchat.
Romain Dillet and Natasha Lomas of TechCrunch reported in early June that Snapchat had acquired Obvious Engineering “a couple of months” earlier, saying at the time that Snapchat was more interested in the company’s computer vision technology and engineering team than in the app.
According to Dillet and Lomas, the acqui-hired members of the Seene engineering team, including at least one senior engineer, are relocating to Los Angeles.
Seene posted the following announcement on its website, with no mention of Snapchat:
After delighting millions of people with new ways to accurately capture, share and re-experience life in 3-D and virtual reality, we are working on an exciting new project.
Our computer vision technology is no longer available for licensing and, beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks, the Seene iOS and Android apps will be transitioned offline.
If you have a Seene account, we’ve made it really easy for you to export your seenes, and you’ll be able to continue to use the app offline.
Click here to enter your account details and request an export of your seenes by Aug. 25. We’ll email you at the email address associated with your account once they’re ready for download.
We’d like to say a big thank you to all of our wonderful Seene users, who proved to the world that anyone can create beautiful 3-D content instantly on their smartphone. We are looking forward to what’s coming next!
