Application discovery company ironSource released its first-quarter-2016 insights from its Fastest Growing Apps platform, which highlighted the growth of politically themed apps ahead of the 2016 presidential election in the U.S. Specifically, Q1 2016 showed more than 60 percent growth in Android apps with names or Google Play store descriptions containing the name of one of the presidential candidates.
ironSource analyzed the top 50 leading apps identified as being “politically oriented” and found that 40 percent of these apps were games, while 20 percent were entertainment apps. Another 14 percent of the apps were in the news and magazines category.
In terms of specific candidates, ironSource found that 75 percent of the apps that included a candidate’s name involved Republican front-runner Donald Trump, while 12 percent involved leading democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and 11 percent involved Bernie Sanders. Only 2 percent of the apps (or three apps in total) involved Ted Cruz.
Of the Trump-themed apps, ironSource said Punch the Trump, Brutal Studio’s game, which allows users to fight “The Donald,” was downloaded more than 280,000 times in March and April. Other Trump games include Trump Dump, Donald Trump: Flappy Hair and Angry Trump.
When looking at the entire Google Play store for Q1 2016 (not just politically themed apps), ironSource found that gaming was the fastest growing-app category in the quarter, followed by media and video apps and photography apps in second and third place, respectively.
In a statement, Omer Kaplan, chief marketing officer and co-founder of ironSource, commented:
The app industry continues to be a fast-moving sector that evolves quickly and dynamically, making tracking tools like Fastest Growing Apps all the more important for developers looking to capitalize on shifting user interests to engage with their target audiences and drive growth. This latest data reflects the increasing importance mobile and digital play in today’s election landscape and illuminates opportunities for developers looking for new ways to target users and increase installs.
