The Pokémon Company and Niantic have revealed new details about the upcoming mobile game Pokémon GO. The game will combine location technology with augmented reality, and will allow players to collect wild Pokémon by exploring the world around them.
In Pokémon GO, some wild Pokémon will only appear in environments matching their ‘type.’ For instance, Water-type Pokémon may only appear when players are near lakes or oceans. Players will be able to evolve some Pokémon by catching the same species on multiple occasions.
As players explore, their phones will vibrate when a wild Pokémon is nearby, and gamers can attempt to catch the Pokémon by throwing a Poké Ball. Players can find these Poké Balls at PokéStops, which may be located at places like public art installations, historical markers and monuments in the real world. Gamers may also find Pokémon Eggs at these PokéStops, which will hatch after they walk a certain distance.
As gamers play, their Trainer level will increase, allowing them to capture more powerful Pokémon and access more items. Gamers will also be able to complete challenges to unlock achievement medals in the game.
In terms of Pokémon battles, users will be able to join one of three teams in Pokémon GO, and battle the other two teams in Pokémon Gym battles. Gyms will also be found at real world locations, and players will be able to assign their Pokémon to empty Gyms. Once a team claims a Gym, players on the other two teams will be able to challenge it.
Pokémon GO is expected to release on the iTunes App Store and Google Play later this year.
