Nintendo has announced its launch plans for its first app on iOS and Android, Miitomo, a social experience which allows users to interact with friends using Nintendo’s Mii characters.
The app will release in March 2016, but players can pre-register for the app starting February 17. To pre-register, users will need to sign up for the new Nintendo Account service using an email address, social media account or existing Nintendo Network ID. Any user who pre-registers between February 17 and launch will receive a ‘Miitomo bonus.’
In Miitomo, users will be able to learn more about their friends by asking them questions such as ‘What song has been stuck in your head lately?’, and ‘Do you believe in aliens?’, as examples. Users will also be able to take and share photos of their Mii within the app.
Nintendo’s new My Nintendo rewards program will launch alongside Miitomo, and will connect to the app. My Nintendo will reward users ‘for interacting with Nintendo products and services in a variety of ways.’
In a statement, Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America, commented:
Miitomo is a uniquely entertaining mobile experience that only Nintendo can deliver. Featuring Mii characters, users will be able to interact with their friends in an entirely new way that transforms communication into a form of play.
Including Miitomo, Nintendo plans to release ‘approximately’ five mobile apps by March 2017.
