Candy Crush Jelly Saga Tops Android Trending Chart in January

Data analytics company SimilarWeb has released new data revealing the most trending Android apps in the U.S. in January. King’s Candy Crush Jelly Saga topped the chart in January, increasing 7,525 places in the U.S. during the month.

SimilarWeb ranks apps based on current installs and active users. According to its data, by the beginning of February, the match-three puzzle game was installed on 2.16 percent of all Android devices in the U.S., with an average session length of seven minutes and 29 seconds.

In addition, the company’s January charts showed an increase in downloads for apps related to federal taxes, as IRS2Go and the Turbo Tax Return App came in at sixth and seventh place, respectively, on the top positively trending apps chart in January.

On the other side, shopping and retail apps Samsung Pay and Walmart were in first and second place, respectively, for the top negatively trending apps in January. SimilarWeb attributes their drop in usage to the end of the holiday shopping season.

Similarly, the end of the regular NFL season was likely responsible for Yahoo Fantasy Sports and ESPN Fantasy Football dropping out of the top 100 most trending apps in January. For January 2016, these apps came in third and fourth place, respectively, on the top negatively trending apps chart.

In a statement, Joseph Schwartz, digital insights manager at SimilarWeb, commented:

Candy Crush Jelly Saga continued its success story at the start of 2016, exciting fans in the way both previous games have in the past. However, January saw shopping and fantasy sports taking a backseat as we became more focused on slightly more prosaic matters like looming tax return deadlines.
