Twitter Shuts Down Indian Engineering Operations, Lays Off ‘Fewer Than 20’

Twitter confirmed that it is shuttering its engineering operations in Bangalore, India, but the number of layoffs is not as drastic as some reports suggested.

The social network confirmed the move to Ingrid Lunden of TechCrunch, with a spokesperson telling her:

As part of our normal business review, we have decided to stop the global engineering work at the Bangalore development center. We thank the impacted individuals, fewer than 20 people, for their valuable contributions and are doing as much as we can to provide them a respectful exit from our company.

Twitter remains committed to India as a strategic market for users, partners and advertisers. We continue to invest in key initiatives to further expand our audience, increase user engagement and drive revenue in this important market.

Lunden pointed out that Twitter still maintains offices in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, and that only the engineering team in the latter was affected.

And Manish Singh of Mashable reported that the layoffs mainly affected the team from offline messaging startup ZipDial, which Twitter acquired in January 2015.
