Wedding brand and marketplace The Knot released the results of “The Knot Social Media Survey 2016,” which revealed how brides use social media from the time of their engagements to their honeymoons.
The Knot‘s survey gathered responses from 1,192 U.S. respondents aged 18 and older (99 percent female and 1 percent male) who had been married less than one year or are currently engaged.
The survey showed that 60 percent of brides announced their engagement on social media within the first 24 hours of saying “yes.” In all, 86 percent of brides said they announced their engagement on social media within the first week.
Once engaged, 62 percent of brides said they increased their social media use, with seven out of 10 saying they used social media for wedding planning “more than anything else.” The survey showed that the top three social sites used during wedding planning were Pinterest (89 percent of respondents), Instagram (38 percent) and Facebook (38 percent).
When planning their weddings, of those couples who used Instagram for both wedding planning and inspiration (46 percent), 26 percent said they hired a wedding vendor they discovered on Instagram.
In addition, 78 percent of all brides said they implemented an idea at their weddings “that they found on social media, but hadn’t seen anywhere else.”
Elsewhere, the survey found that 66 percent of couples plan on using or have used a personalized hashtag for their weddings. This is an increase from 11 percent of couples in 2014.
In terms of the wedding day itself, the survey found that 74 percent of couples said they wanted to be “disconnected from social media.”
Overall, 27 percent of couples said they posted on social media at some point during their wedding day, and 30 percent said they requested “a few professional photos” from their photographers to share on social media the day of their wedding.
Finally, 70 percent of brides said they shared about their nuptials on social media within the first 24 hours of getting married.
In a statement, Kellie Gould, editor in chief of The Knot, commented:
Our study confirms that social media isn’t just a distraction from wedding planning—it’s actually influencing wedding decisions in new and different ways. It’s fascinating to learn that nearly eight out of 10 couples report implementing an idea they found on social media that they had not previously considered on their own.
