Reports surfaced last June that Clonee in Ireland’s County Meath would be the site for Facebook’s newest data center, and the social network made it official Sunday.
Vice president of infrastructure Tom Furlong announced in a Newsroom post that construction was already underway on the company’s sixth overall data center and second in Europe, adding that the facility will be 100 percent powered by renewable energy, and pointing out that Ireland is also the home of Facebook’s international headquarters.
Furlong offered more details about powering the facility, as well as its use of Open Compute Project gear, in an engineering blog post:
When it’s finished, the data center will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, making good use of Ireland’s abundant wind resources. This will help us reach our goal of powering 50 percent of our infrastructure with clean and renewable energy by the end of 2018.
The facility will be one of the most advanced data centers in the world, featuring OCP server and storage hardware, including Yosemite for compute and fabric, Wedge and 6-pack in the network stack. It will be a central part of Facebook’s global infrastructure, making it possible to deliver our family of applications and services to billions of people. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg chimed in, as well, saying in a Facebook post (embedded below):
One interesting engineering detail is that we’re cooling the facility with outdoor air, but because this is near the Irish Sea, we’ll be using an indirect air cooling process to filter the salt from the air.
