The Houston Chronicle was the most effective print publication on Facebook, while Business Insider topped the digital-only list, and the two winners for Twitter were The New York Times and BuzzFeed, respectively.
Those rankings were based on the eValue tool from Engagement Labs, which is made up of engagement, impact and responsiveness metrics.
Engagement Labs elaborated on how it formulates its eValue scores:
Engagement is the level of interaction content receives on a specific social network. Impact is the reach content receives on a specific social network. And responsiveness measures how much, how fast and how well a brand responds to actual conversations amongst its users.
The five top overall publications on Facebook were:
- Houston Chronicle

And Twitter’s top five were:
- BuzzFeed
- TheBlaze
- The Verge
- The Huffington Post
- CNET
The top 10 digital-only publications on Facebook were:

Engagement Labs also offered the following insights about its findings in a release:
On Facebook, print publications are performing better overall relative to exclusively online digital publications. This can be attributed to the nature of the audience of print publications–those who enjoy reading lengthier articles. Articles on Facebook have a longer shelf life with the trending news section and popular news items staying at the top of users’ News Feeds.
On Twitter, digital publications dominated, as the top five overall news outlets were digital publications, with not a single print publication making the list. Online fans for digital publications are accustomed to receiving their news updates via online venues, which helps explain the better performance on Twitter–a channel designed for real-time updates.
Overall, both print and digital have performed well on Facebook, with average eValue scores and engagement scores in the 90s out of the possible 100. Easier sharing capabilities and longer shelf life have contributed to extremely high scores for all news outlets on the channel.
On Twitter, engagement is much lower in comparison to Facebook for both print and digital outlets, as it’s much easier to miss news items when your news feed gets cluttered. Twitter was designed more for breaking news updates in comparison to Facebook, which can help explain the lower engagement scores.
